Leonardo lecture in cooperation with the working group “Wiedervorlage Aufarbeitung Machtmissbrauch” of the Diocesan Council of Catholics of the Diocese of Aachen and the Independent Processing Commission on Sexualised Violence of the Diocese of Aachen.

In this event we will deal with the topic “Church and Violence” in an interdisciplinary way. The seminar will offer a diverse selection of topics that will shed light on different aspects of violence in the context of the church. The aim of the seminar is to develop a deep understanding of the link between the church and violence, to analyse historical and contemporary contexts and to discuss potential solutions.

Learning Outcomes

  • Understanding the role of violence in religious texts such as the Bible and its implications for church practice.
  • Raising awareness of the psychological consequences of trauma caused by violence for those affected and exploring possible treatment options for perpetrators.
  • Acquiring knowledge about different forms of church violence, including warlike foreign policy and violence against women and children.
  • In-depth examination of sexualised abuse of power within the Catholic Church.

This course provides you with a comprehensive understanding of the topic “Church and Violence” and offers you the opportunity to critically reflect on the effects of and solutions to violence within church structures.
