Climate change is one of the central challenges of the coming years and decades. The reduction of greenhouse gas emissions requires a profound change in our economic systems, this is especially true for the energy-intensive raw material industries, such as the steel, cement, chemical, aluminium and paper production.
In this Leonardo Lecture, we will analyse the challenges and possible solutions for a sustainable, climate-neutral and competitive raw materials industry in North Rhine-Westphalia and Germany by 2045. The results from the NRW strategy project SCI4climate.NRW are presented by experts from the RWTH Aachen University, Fraunhofer UMSICHT, Wuppertal Institute and the Cologne Institute for Economic Research, as well as other partners, such as the Verein Deutscher Zementwerke e.V. and the VDEh-Betriebsforschungsinstitut GmbH.
