Content

Theatre Aachen invites students to an exclusive workshop to take a look behind the scenes and get to know the fascinating world of theatre. In a small and interactive format, participants can discover the different aspects of theatre and try out their own artistic skills. Whether theatre enthusiasts or newcomers, this workshop offers a unique opportunity to experience theatre up close.

In the coming season, Aachen Theatre will be celebrating its 200th birthday. Over the past 200 years, the theatre has not only created many outstanding productions, but has also engaged in significant discourse and broken new ground. Theatre Aachen aims to be a place of inspiration and artistic development for its city. In numerous productions and formats this season too. But is theatre still contemporary? Is it not outdated and obsolete? To what extent does it participate in the current discourses in the city, or is it just simple entertainment?

We want to try to find out. The perhaps unknown areas of theatre will be illuminated and at the same time the question will be asked to what extent theatre is also resistance – in the past and today. Perhaps simply going to the theatre is also a form of resistance?

1st Theoretical Part: Theatre and Resistance

  • Speakers: Prof Ralf Schneider and Prof Sven-Knut Strasen (English Studies)

2nd Practical Insight: The theatre business

  • Content: Insights into the interdisciplinary processes of the theatre. How is a production created? Which steps and who is involved?
  • Activities: Accompanying the rehearsal process of the current production ‘Oppenhoff’, discussions with those involved and analysing the content of the play.

3rd Scenic Workshop: Trying things out for yourself

  • Content: Creative workshop in which the participants develop and present their own small projects or scenes on the topic of ‘resistance’, for example.
  • Aim: To gain practical experience, discover artistic skills and creatively realise the theme of resistance.

Due to the very limited number of participants, we ask that you only register if you are able and willing to participate in the module on a regular basis.

Learning Outcome

The participants should

  • develop a comprehensive understanding of theatre and its importance in today’s society.
  • They should get to know the different processes and structures in the theatre.
  • They should learn which work steps are involved in a production.
  • They should be encouraged to experience the theatre as a place of artistic development and social discourse
  • and actively participate in it themselves.

Program

The seminar comprises different blocks:

  • Theatre// Drama// Literature Introduction from English Studies
  • Guided tour of the theatre // Guided tour of the workshops (separate dates to be agreed with the group)
