Climate change is omnipresent – and obviously caused by humans. It is therefore a consequence of human actions, and therefore also something for which we are responsible. On the one hand, many people have benefited from the actions that bring about climate change. On the other hand, it harms many people, especially those who do not cause it and are therefore not responsible for it. Measures are now needed to contain climate change and mitigate its consequences for people.

This module will focus on the social dimension of climate change and discuss why and to what extent the climate crisis is also a crisis of justice.  The aim is to discuss how different the effects of the climate crisis are on different social groups and regions and who bears responsibility for taking action against climate change.

‘Climate justice’ is used as a political demand, as a buzz word, for greenwashing and as a technical term by activists, politicians, companies and people in everyday conversations. But what exactly this term means is often unclear and requires further clarification, to which the presentations in this module will contribute. Overall, we want to address the question of what a climate-just world looks like or can look like.

 Outlook
A follow-up format is planned for this event (attendance is not compulsory). This will focus on the question of how students can become active locally. Insights into regional climate justice projects will be provided.

Learning Outcomes

  • Students should learn about and be able to categorise the global context of the climate crisis and understand the climate crisis as a global justice crisis.
  • They should develop a differentiated understanding of the concept of climate justice
  • and be familiarised with interdisciplinary approaches to climate justice.
  • Above all, they should also acquire the ability to analyse social aspects of the climate crisis.
