Due to digitalization, we are in times of massive upheaval that is transforming the entire economy and raising many questions. The Internet has greatly changed the way we inform ourselves and communicate with each other, and thus also how we acquire knowledge. And we are only at the beginning. However, digitalization is far too often viewed only from an economic perspective and not from a human rights perspective. Yet there is every reason to do so, because global digitization raises a number of serious questions: How will artificial intelligence and Big Data affect society? What will the platform economy do to us? What modern forms of surveillance exist and what will they lead to? How will robotics change our lives? How will future wars be fought? Such questions will be discussed and, if possible, answered in this series. In addition to lectures on the topics below, discussions are an excellent way to address them, since pretty much everyone has been exposed to social media at some point.
At the end of these courses, students should be able to distinguish between the influence of privately run companies (such as those from Silicon Valley) and the influence of the state: For better or worse. They should be able to recognize what problems exist and may yet arise in the context of human rights compliance. They should also be able to understand what problems will still face our generation as “digital natives” in the future and what major challenges we will face with the digital transformation.
