Development cooperation recently replaced the term development aid, because it is about creating global cooperation and jointly reducing socioeconomic differences between the poorer and wealthier countries of this world. As much good as has already been done in the context of international cooperation, the existence of development cooperation reinforces a worldview in which there are those who help and those who are helpless. The course “Development Cooperation at Eye Level” deals with the challenge of not reducing people in the global South to their needs, of conducting effective development cooperation, and of working together side by side to achieve successes for people and the planet on a global level, as well as with many other exciting questions about development cooperation. We will discuss how the legacy of the colonial era influences the work of development cooperation organizations, how today’s widespread savior narrative came into being and is propagated, how development cooperation is financed, organized and evaluated, and examples of effective cooperation. People from all professional fields strive for interna:onal coopera:on, exchange and improvement of global conditions, and thus development coopera:on like this module is independent of professional boundaries. Therefore, the course module “Development Cooperation at Eye Level” is suitable for all interested people regardless of their field of study. The more colorful the team, the more diverse the approaches to solutions!
In this course, students receive an overview of the origins, management and challenges of modern development cooperation. Subsequently, you will be familiar with the working and financing mechanisms of development cooperation organizations and projects. They know criteria by which the effectiveness of a project can be assessed and know what to look out for in public relations in order to reduce postcolonially distorted portrayals and to promote cooperation on an equal level.
