„The Sustainable Development Goals are the blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all. They address the global challenges we face, including those related to poverty, inequality, climate, environmental degradation, prosperity, and peace and justice. The Goals interconnect and in order to leave no one behind, it is important that we achieve each Goal and target by 2030.“
(United Nations, https://www.un.org/sustainabledevelopment/sustainable-development-goals/)
With the adoption of Agenda 2030, a further milestone was set in 2015 in the global sustainability debate for sustainable development. The Agenda sets out 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that address the five core messages of people, planet, prosperity, peace and partnership.
In this interdisciplinary course, various SDGs are addressed by experts from different fields. In WS21/22, the focus is particularly on the topics of inequality and justice.
Students should be familiar with the SDGs and understand their role as political objectives and models for a worldwide development process. They should be able to differentiate between the Millennium Development Goals and the SDGs and understand the relevance of the SDGs, especially for Western nations.
The students should be able to evaluate issues from their respective studies under the paradigm of sustainability. They should identify how the work in their subject areas contributes to solving the problems identified in the SDGs. In addition, students should learn to evaluate different career paths in terms of global sustainability.
