It is hard to imagine society without science communication. Scientific actors are increasingly appearing as experts in public debates on a wide range of topics – from pandemics and the energy transition to ways to combat populism. At the same time, the public communication of one’s own research is also becoming increasingly important in the science system itself. There is hardly a university left that does not show off its own quality to the public and hardly a research proposal that would still do without the aspect of communicating the findings to certain, also non-scientific, target groups. So communicating is becoming more and more important in everyday work, whether in research, the private sector or the public service.
But what actually constitutes successful science communication? What are the possibilities, contents, formats and target groups? And how complex is the technical implementation? This seminar offers students the opportunity to try out their own skills and to reflect on them. First, an introductory first part offers a theoretical and practical overview regarding motivation, requirements and quality features. Afterwards, the students themselves are called upon: with the support of the event supervisors, they will work in groups to plan and implement a piece of science communication that can then be used in schools, for example, as an introduction to a series of lessons and can actually be used.
The students know different types and requirements of and for science communication. They use different media formats and techniques to prepare scientific content in a communicative way. They reflect on the quality of media products of science communication with regard to defined quality criteria (e.g. correctness of content, media preparation, workload, appropriateness with regard to the target group, etc.).
